Free Arts for Abused Children

Since 1977, this organization has woven the joyful and therapeutic qualities of the arts into the lives of abused, abandoned and neglected children and families in crisis. Using dance, drama, music, painting and other avenues of creativity, Free Arts help children to channel their emotions, release pent-up anger and develop positive methods of communication.

Most of these kids would have no exposure to art were it not for what Free Arts offers. The children served by this wonderful organization are typically dependents of the court and live in institutional settings at or below the poverty level. In Los Angeles, there are about 55,000 such children.

The concept is so powerful, that Free Arts for Abused Children has begun to foster affiliates around the country, with Los Angeles serving as the National Office. So far, there are affiliates in New York, Phoenix, Portland, Chicago and Minneapolis, with others pending.

Free Arts' success is owed completely to its volunteers - their generosity, love and commitment. Often, the volunteers are the only adults not paid to be in these children's lives.
